Lights Out, (20 mins), Onyeka Igwe
Theatre is a Great British institution. From Shakespeare to Laurence Oliver to Andrew Lloyd Webber and his incessant reality TV star searches – theatre really is in the British psyche.Like parish councils, the Women’s Institute and rotary clubs, theatre is how the Great British public come together and create community. Or should I say it has been the way we create community, for now in 21st century Britain, amateur dramatics is in danger becoming a forgotten relic of the past.“Lights Out” delves into the world of amateur dramatics and local theatre to see how one theatre in Ilford is trying to stay relevant in a multicultural and thoroughly modern Britain.
All Ground Is Holy (24 min), Maria Court
Union Chapel, a magnificent London non conformist church built in 1877, is nowadays a highly recognized concert venue, a centre for homeless people and still a working church with a few people coming in every Sunday. Whilst the place is becoming more and more popular for its secular events, its liberal minister with its small congregation are fighting to keep its spiritual facet alive into Britain’s 21st century society.
Dylan Dog Biting His Tail (25 min), Lucio Cesare Casellato
This is an experimental documentary about the power of imagination.
The film deals with the fascination and influence of fantasy on reality, taking a real coincidence as an excuse to investigate the thin line which divides fiction from reality. At the same time, the quest for truth in reality becomes part of the film maker’s own personal journey, through his dreams and nightmares.
Armenian woman with a movie camera – film based on “Hasmik’s Diary”
(20 min) Devised and directed by Hasmik Gasparyan
There are times in our life when we are so overcome with the need to share our sincere feelings, wonders, worries and dreams in our diaries. Sometimes we must suppress our anxieties and share our personal diary with the public.
Underpass (16 min), Danilo Pschera
There are hundreds of underpasses in London. They are simple, ugly and drab, with a banal purpose: allowing people to reach the other side of the road. They can have another function, though. This documentary collected reports from foreigners living in London, and found in the underpass a way to represent their experiences here.
Stray Dogs (27 min), Luisa Miller
Since the 80s thousands of Libyan’s have been forced to flee Gaddafi’s regime, which has no tolerance for political dissent. The persecution of perceived opponents, even those abroad who he insultingly calls ‘stray dogs’, has been widely documented.
This film explores the pain of years in exile through the stories of five Libyan-Londoners, their actions in supporting the fight for freedom and their hope for an opportunity to finally be able to return home.
